"Zero maintenance" is the reason most people choose artificial greenery in the first place — and it's true, in the sense that there's no watering, feeding or pruning involved. But zero maintenance doesn't mean zero care. A few minutes of upkeep every month or two is what keeps it looking new for five, ten years or more, instead of just looking tired after year one.
Indoor Plants: Dust Is the Only Enemy
For indoor artificial plants and trees, dust build-up is the main thing that dulls their appearance over time. A soft microfiber cloth or a feather duster run gently over the leaves every few weeks keeps colour and texture looking fresh. For dense foliage, a hairdryer on a cool, low setting blows dust out from between leaves.
Green Walls: Vacuum or Compressed Air
Vertical green walls collect dust differently than potted plants because of their density and orientation. A vacuum cleaner on a low-suction brush attachment, held a few centimetres away, lifts dust without pulling leaves loose. Compressed air reaches into gaps a vacuum can't.

Outdoor Greenery: Rinse, Don't Scrub
Outdoor artificial plants, trees and green walls are built with UV-stabilised, weatherproof materials, so they're naturally more resistant to dust and grime than indoor pieces — rain does a lot of the work for you. A garden hose on a gentle spray setting is usually enough for a deeper clean. Avoid pressure washers and abrasive scrubbing, which can wear down the coating that keeps outdoor foliage colourfast under direct sun.
What to Avoid
- Harsh chemical cleaners or bleach, which can discolour leaves and degrade UV coatings
- Submerging electrical or foam-based components (some trunks and bases) in water
- Direct, sustained heat sources like space heaters placed close to foliage
- Scrubbing green wall panels with stiff brushes, which can loosen leaf attachments
Indoors, a light dusting every 3-4 weeks is plenty. Outdoors, rely on rain for routine upkeep and hose down every couple of months, or after sandstorms which are common in the UAE. That's the entire routine — no schedules, no products to buy, no specialist visits required.
